This flame texture has multiple uses. It can be used as fuel coming out of a spaceship (that's what the custom render shape was used for), lava, fire, or even an explosion (if you apply it to a sphere). Applying "Fractal Subdivide"" in the edit menu to the mesh makes it more realistic. Also, since the texture works on the vertices of a mesh, its a good idea to subdivide.
Note: The spaceship shown on "custom render" does not appear in the downloadable .blend file.
